There was so much data for both X and Zero, that we had to employ a compression routine to store it all, then decompress it when you actually load a given stage. So, for example, if he’s walking and he suddenly stops, his hair comes to a rest in a more natural way. Okohara: Zero’s main body and his hair are made up of two different sprites. There were twice as many sprite animation patterns to create too. In particular, we struggled in the beginning with the massive amount of backgrounds we had to draw, but I think they came out looking really nice. The CG, voicework, and other technical aspects are a huge jump up from the previous Super Famicom games.

To address that, we raised his attack power and added Street Fighter-style moves, so he feels completely different from X. Okohara: Yeah, his sword doesn’t have any reach, and they thought it would make the game too difficult. Takenaka: I remember the vast majority of the developers were against that decision at first, actually. And there’s no “charge” ability for his weapon, either. Okohara: Looking back at X3, we felt there wasn’t enough difference between the way Zero and X controlled, so we we tried to really distinguish them this time. Enjoy this title, it gets worse from here.MMX4’s rendition of Zero, fully differentiated from X by a plethora of fun and flashy moves designed for close-quarters combat.

This was something that x3 severely needed and it’s a good plus on x4. The game gives the player a feeling of polish and quality, like the developers put their soul into it. Overall, this game may be easier compared to other games but it has charm. Sigma is fun to fight and his voice acting is probably the best out of the cast (not saying much though). The third end game stage is just a boss rush and the final boss. At least the top path requires use of the Web Spider weapon which is creative but not much else positive. The second end game stage is just a mostly uninteresting path to an equally lousy boss. The first one is pretty good but too short.

The X series isn’t very strong in the end game typically but this is when they started to get lazy. It is clearly a product of rushed development. They are very nicely made and have a certain charm to them. THE BOSSES, DELICIOUS! I adore the bosses of x4. Every maverick stage is good pretty much (even Jet Stingray in my opinion). There’s the fun platforming and combat in Web Spider, the speed running first half of Cyber Peacock that rewards you for learning the stage and using speed to your advantage (SO GOOD), and even more combat focused stages such as Slash Beast and Storm Owl hit a spot that Storm Eagle or Grizzly Slash wish they could. Mega Man X4 is a GREAT GAME! I love the graphics and the new sprites and animations are fantastic. It’s a shame the stage design drags down the whole package, and I really hoped that stage designs like Web Spider would have been implemented more into the other stages. I think X4 is an overrated game, but it’s certainly not a bad game, either. Things like Soul Body and Aiming Laser are pretty good, however.

Weapons are below average, they aren’t really that useful. The endgame bosses vary in quality, but Sigma’s final form is pretty fun to fight. Short, lifeless stages crammed with enemies and hidden pits. Most of them have good telegraphs for their attacks and put up a good fight.Įnd-game stages are horrendous, however. X4 really excels with it’s boss fights, however. Don’t get me wrong, there are some fun parts of the stages and they resemble bare minimums for Maverick stages but lack the charm and wit of the predecessor games. Things like Electric Stingray’s stage is just a glorified biking section that causes frustration and ends without any platforming at all. You’ll usually just run past everything while taking mere scratches of damage. Most of them are either too short, too forgiving or/and forgettable. Unfortunately, the rest of the stages aren’t very fun. Minus points for resetting your health and ammo halfway in the stage, however. From the crawling snakes, to giant bee nests, flying fish and mermen sea creatures, this embodies a fun stage. I really love nature themed water stages, and this really rocks.

This is a full fledged platforming stage with tons of fun enemy types. My favorite stage, by far, is Web Spider’s. There are some creative stage mechanics like Frost Walrus and the melting stairs, or the speed running type strategy in Cyber Peacock’s stage. The music is quite nice, the graphics can be beautiful at times like Web Spider’s stage and enemy variety has increased. X4 has a lot of redeeming qualities, however. X4 is a game I wanted to love, but it didn’t quite hit the mark like it’s SNES counterparts.
